Railway was built over 100 years ago to serve the copper mines of the central Nevada mountains. Kennecott closed it down about 40 years ago, but did not scrap it. They left over 150 miles of track, 3 steam locomotives, vintage diesels, the original rolling stock, shops, and depot. A group of volunteers operates it today as a historical foundation. The curator of technology at Smithsonian views it as "the best preserved short-line railroad on the continent." Steam excursions and locomotive rentals available throughout the year. Ask for a visit up in the cab when they are at the station and they will usually accommodate you for a visit to see what it all about. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience do the locomotive rental. You get to drive the steam engine for 2 hours up 2.5% grades and through mountain tunnels. Pretty cool.

This is my 4th time riding the rails on the NNRR. Each time has been an amazing experience, and each has provided new insights of the past. NNRR personnel are kind, knowledgeable, and efficient. I particularly enjoy the steam engines and the maintenance shop.

if you get a chance to do their wild west tour, it is cheesy, but fun.

The must see attraction in Ely. The is no place quite like it where you can walk up to trains in an active train roundhouse.
